This year, the Waltham Dual Language School was fortunate to receive a Creative Projects for Schools grant from Mass Cultural Council. We were thrilled to be able to welcome back puppet artist and Waltham resident Sarah Nolen of Puppet Motion to work with our students for the third consecutive year. Kindergarten students practiced literacy skills and self expression with a “Word Play” puppet show and hands on workshops in drama class. First grade students made science connections with light and shadow by creating their own shadow puppets and taking a trip to Puppet Showplace Theater of Brookline for a performance of “Lisa the Wise”. And for the first time this year, Ms. Nolen was able to work with some of our older students, giving our third and fourth graders not only a wonderful show, but also a behind the scenes look at all that goes into a professional performance of “The Fairy Tailor”. Students were able to hone their writing, public speaking, and performing skills by preparing high quality questions for an artist talkback session and puppet workshop after the performance. Thanks so much to Sarah Nolen and Mass Cultural Council for providing these enriching opportunities for our students. We hope to continue and expand on these programs in future school years!
